A Peek At A Few Of The Most Recent Wireless Gadgets
Newest wireless audio gizmos such as iPods, wireless headphones and cell phones support new wireless protocols. These protocols are supposed to eliminate the cord and provide perfect high-fidelity audio. I will take a look at several of the latest devices and technologies to learn how well they work and in which conditions they operate best.
These devices fall into 2 categories. The first category of products already has wireless built in. Bluetooth is a relatively low-cost option but has some drawbacks which are frequently overlooked.

2) Audio compression due to limited data rate
Bluetooth reliably supports data transmission rates of approximately 1 Mbps only which is not enough for uncompressed CD-quality audio. Thus Bluetooth applies audio compression. This is less critical however for compressed audio such as MP3 audio but excludes Bluetooth from use in high-quality audio applications.
3) Signal latency
Because of audio compression, Bluetooth will cause a signal delay of no less than 10 ms which will cause the audio to be somewhat out of sync in case of video and real-time applications. This is yet again less of a dilemma for MP3 players.
4) No multiple headphone support
Bluetooth is fairly restricted regarding supporting streaming to several headphones. Streaming to several headphones is practical for numerous people wanting to listen to the same transmitter. This is less of a problem for MP3 player applications.
WiFi is one more commonly used wireless protocol that is also suitable for audio streaming. WiFi does support uncompressed audio but will have problems transmitting to a high number of wireless receivers simultaneously. Because of the high availability, WiFi is convenient for streaming audio from a PC. On the other hand, WiFi products have rather High Power consumption. For this reason wireless headphones typically do not use this technology.
While newest-generation wireless speakers and wireless amplifier products utilize proprietary digital technologies, entry-level devices often still depend on FM transmission which is noisy and has high audio degradation and high susceptibility to radio interference.
More recent wireless audio protocols are based on digital transmission. This prevents audio degradation. Several protocols also incorporate error correction to deal with interference from other wireless products.
Latest-generation wireless amplifiers utilize uncompressed audio transmission. Latest protocols also allow streaming to an unlimited number of receivers. This enables whole-house audio distribution.
Some of these protocols support low-latency audio transmission which ensures that the audio of all speakers will be in sync in a multi-channel application. Wireless audio transmitter devices typically work at 2.4 GHz or sometimes in the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band including Amphony's wireless audio devices.
Wireless amplifiers are available with different levels of audio quality, power consumption and standby power. Getting a high-quality low-distortion amplifier is essential for good sound quality. Digital amplifiers generally offer a power efficiency of at least 80% and standby power consumption of less than 5 Watts which keeps them cool during operation and helps save energy. However, some Class-D amps have relatively high audio distortion. It is crucial to select a wireless amplifier with low audio distortion. This will ensure good sound quality. High-quality amplifiers have audio distortion of 0.05% or less.
