A Brief Review on Zoom H2 Portable Recorder
Zoom H2 is at the same time a very simple and a very powerful recording device capable of producing excellent quality recordings.
A main feature of Zoom H2 Handy Recorder is the 4 mic capsules, which distinguishes it from many other recorders which only have 2 mics. With these 4 mics in W-XY patterns you can record from the front for 90° cardioid, from rear for 120° cardioid, and in 360° polar patterns. With 4 mic capsules in a W-X/Y configuration, the audio is decoded instantly, bringing these four signals together for unparalleled stereo imaging. After recording, the built-in 3D panning function gives you full control over the front/rear/left/right balance. Or you can use other commercially available software to create 5.1 surround recordings.
Zoom H2 Recorder gives you amazing versatility with its wide variety of recording formats. Choose 24bit/96kHz linear PCM (WAV files) format to get the highest audio quality. Or, if you aim for longer recording in smaller file size, you can opt to record in MP3 format. You can even do 360° recordings in 24bit/48kHz format. You can capture from fine nuances of an acoustic instrument to the realistic ambience of a venue with Zoom H2's high-resolution recording capability.
Zoom H2 can also take SD cards (a 512MB SD card is included in the box) which you can use to save your recording. Using 16GB SD card, you can have up to 24 hours of total recording time using the 16-bit/44.1kHz WAV format. At 128kbps MP3, you get an amazing 280 hours of stereo recording. The H2 also has a USB 2.0 interface, allowing you to connect the device to a PC or Mac and move your recordings there for further processing. You can also use the H2 Recorder as a USB Mic for recording directly to a computer. And, direct playback on Zoom H2 is also possible. You can choose between single-file playback, single-file repeat, all-file playback, or all-file repeat.
Physically, H2 Recorder has a screen to display recording information such as recording levels, time, file name and remaining battery. LEDs are used to show Front, Rear, 2 Channel or 4 Channel modes and the recording angle. It has active mic LED at the front and back of the unit. The control mechanisms include single button recording, playback-pause, fast forward and rewind. In order to record, you only need to push the record button. One button recording, gain controls on the side and an intuitive user interface allow you to always capture the moment. Set your levels, push record and go. That's all. Or use the Auto Start and Auto Gain Control functions to ensure complete capture at the right level. In terms of power, Zoom H2 can run continuously for approximately 4 hours on 2 x AA batteries, thanks to its low-power circuitry. In order to do longer sessions, you can power the device using the AC adapter. If you use the unit as SD Card Reader or as USB mic, it can operate on USB bus power. The device is very portable, weighing only approximately 4 ounces.
