Optimising Your Website Structure

Web site architecture is an exceedingly crucial aspect of search engine optimisation because it helps determine the site's placement and performance in the results. Search engine optimisation starts with the introductory structure of a website. If a site doesn't have efficient web structure, there is no way it will rank well in the SERPs. If your overall architecture is flawed in any way then no amount of unique content or backlinks are going to help you.

Both Google and Microsofts Bing have seen this as an issue and provided webmasters with various resources to help

Robots.txt File

You need to make sure that your robots.txt file has the correct status and does not return an error message. While reviewing the settings of the robots.txt file, make sure that all web pages are blocked nicely.

File and Directory Names

Use descriptive file and directory names because it is not only easier for users to relate to and remember, but they also increase the relevancy of the web pages. Use your keywords cunningly and phrases within the name. If the names are actually rather long then try to use hyphens instead of actual underscores.

Directory Depth

Search engine spiders crawl website directories to index them for rankings in the search engines. If the directory is too deep then there is a high chance that they will not index the whole site. If you have authoritative content buried deep in your directories, they may never be seen by the spiders. Make your directory structure no more than four levels from the root directory.

Getting the correct structure in place will get you on track to garner good and hearty revenue from your site, it will put you one step ahead of your competitors and allow you to have a great head start over them all.
