Tech Revealed - SDSL Versus Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - What Are The Main Differences
Part of the digital subscriber line technologies is Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line or ADSL. Over telephone copper cables, this allows for High Speed communication, rather than using the traditional dial up modem By 2005 most households had swapped over to ADSL, having become more common in 2003. Operating on different frequencies, ADSL and telephones must be split by plugging a micro filter into each telephone point used in a house. Although if you are really looking for speed you might want to look at a dedicated leased line.
With ADSL being asymmetrical it means that the upload speed is less than that of the download speed. Many service providers are now starting to offer up to 24mb and just about all offer up to 8mb of service. However, in the real world unless you live right near the exchange you won't get those speeds. The speed is based not only on the distance from the exchange, but also the noise on the line (attenuation) and signal to noise ratio. Normally on these kind of services you would expect an upload speed of around 700kb. If you are a home user not needing to make large uploads this is more than suitable.
An SDSL broadband connection might be considered if you need to work, or make large file transfers. These are normally business class connections and so get a much better support service and reliability. But do expect to pay out quite a bit more.
Most home users would consider SDSL overkill, mostly because of the costs involved. But the upload speeds are getting faster for standard ADSL broadband in the UK. For example, ADSL 2+ ITU G.992.5 Annex M, can allow upload speeds of up to 3mbit/s. For those living in remote areas in the UK, it's a waiting game for new services to be offered.
SDSL or Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line means that you get the same speed both up the line as well as down. Do remember though, not all exchanges are SDSL enabled, so its important to find out first. The service is normally offered as 512k, 1mb or 2mb up and down speed. Because SDSL operates on the POTS telephone service, you cannot operate it on a standard telephone line. Depending on the noise and data rate on the line dicates the distance at which SDSL can be used.
SDSL allows you to have the same download speed as upload speed. Do remember though, not all exchanges are SDSL enabled, so its important to find out first. You will normally have the choice of either 512, 1mb or 2mb, upload and download speeds. business broadband SDSL operates on the same range of frequencies that the POTS telephone service operates on, and so cannot be used with a standard telephone service, even with a microfilter splitter fitted. The distance that SDSL can be implemented on depends on how much noise there is on the line and the data rate used on the line.
